Castle Rock
Henk Wust (2003)
Castle Rock is the latest creation of our scenic wizard Henk Wust and was introduced to the public at the June 2003 Valkenburg show. The theme of this layout is a Navy seaplane base at the start of WW2, inspired by Calshot and similar military establishments. Transport around the base is by narrow gauge railway and the rolling stock has clear War Department origins. An unusual and interesting theme drawing many visitors, Castle Rock was awarded the second place in the layout contest at Valkenburg.

Military column passing through the village centre on its way to the base. The loco shed (left) seems to be partly built into a former village house. Note the forced perspective used by Henk. Right: a train of toastrack carriages waits to carry military personnel. Photos JvM. |

The centre unit of the layout is taken up by a seaplane (or more correctly amphibious plane) hangar and ramp down to the water's edge. Inside the hangar a seaplane's engine is being run up. Photos JvM. |

Left: Henk in a typical pose, rather like directing an orchestra and talking to the public at the same time. Right: the seaplane with its running engine is a creation of Jaap Stuurman which attracted much attention. Photos MT. |

Left: another overview of the layout. At the right-hand end is a scene where a MGB (motor gunboat), having delivered what looks like wreckage from a seaplane, draws away from the pier. The crane is being used to lift a plane float out of the water on to a train. Photos MT. |
